Welcome to Moncur Knitwear

I am Susan Moncur, founder and designer of Moncur Knitwear. I create colourful knitwear accessories inspired by my love of colour, pattern, texture and the vibrant textile heritage of the Scottish Borders. 

The little orange heart at the centre of my logo sums Moncur up rather well - everything is designed with a wee bit of my heart. I make in small quantities using beautiful yarns to create pieces that are colourful, wearable and a little bit different.

Inspired by the Scottish Borders

Living in Scotland, inspiration is everywhere. I live and work in the Scottish Borders, surrounded by hills, countryside and a long history of making beautiful textiles. I find design ideas in the landscape, flowers, textures and especially in my collection of vintage fabric treasures, with their wonderful colours and patterns. Some ideas are planned and others evolve as I work, which is probably why Moncur pieces are often that wee bit different.

     

About Susan Moncur

I’ve always loved textiles and fashion. I studied at Heriot-Watt University in the Scottish Borders before going on to complete a Master’s in Fashion at Domus Academy in Milan. I then spent over 20 years working in the fashion and textile industry before moving into teaching, where I’ve been able to share that experience with the next generation of young designers and makers.

Moncur Knitwear began in 2020 and gave me the chance to get back to designing for myself. It brings together everything I love - great yarns, colour, pattern and texture - with the freedom to experiment and make things in my own way.

Made in Small Quantities

Moncur pieces are made in small quantities, often using surplus and end-of-line yarns from Scotland’s textile industry. I love being able to give these gorgeous yarns a new life and it also means colours and combinations change depending on what I find.

I also hate seeing lovely textiles go to waste, so sometimes I’ll get behind the sewing or knitting machine myself and get creative, turning old pieces into something new. For me, it’s about making the most of what I have, wasting as little as possible and creating something a wee bit different along the way.
